The order in which widgets are placed on the page z-index really makes a difference for several reasons.

When creating a form, get the ordering right (back to front) of your form fields so that clicking TAB will move to the next field in sequence.

Also, objects in interaction palettes are ordered in the same z-index sequence as they are arranged on your page.

So, use ‘Send to back’ and ‘Bring to front’ to order your widgets on the page before working on lengthy interactions, so that objects are logically grouped together. This really helps to decrease the effort in searching for your widgets in those interaction windows.

Further to this, the ordering of objects will also affect the order they are output in the specification generator: So if you want something to appear first, ensure it is sent to the back on the page!

  1. “So if you want something to appear first, ensure it is sent to the back on the page!”

    Seems a little counter-intuitive, don’t you think?
